Yang Zuotang: Bridging Chinese and American Culture Through Calligraphy on Fans
Calligrapher Yang Zuotang Promotes Chinese Calligraphy, Blending Chinese and American Culture on Small Fans
(California, Silicon Valley) - This past Friday, calligrapher Yang Zuotang visited Cherrywood Elementary School in California, USA, to conduct a lively calligraphy workshop for high-grade elementary school students. The theme of this workshop was "I Love My Family," aiming to express American "family" culture through Chinese calligraphy.
During the event, Yang Zuotang introduced the mysteries and beauty of the Chinese writing structure to the students. In order to inspire these children, she emphasized the penmanship techniques of calligraphy, stating, "There is no fixed way of holding the brush; as long as it is conducive to turning the brush shaft and follows the correct strokes, one can write well." She personally demonstrated and encouraged students to appreciate the traces left by the soft brush on the rice paper, using the strength of their fingers and wrists to control the strokes and construct Chinese characters. The students actively participated, using ink and brushes to write about home culture on small fans.
At the end of the event, Yang Zuotang gifted her calligraphy speech, "The Charm of Calligraphy," to each student who participated in the workshop. This special gift is not only a reward for the students' involvement in the workshop but also conveys the charm of Chinese calligraphy. In addition, Yang Zuotang also inscribed Cherrywood Elementary School.
As the Chairperson of the Yang Jianhou Foundation, Yang Zuotang has consistently adhered to her father's artistic education spirit and is dedicated to promoting the dissemination of Chinese culture and cross-cultural exchange. This workshop by Yang Zuotang not only enriched the cultural life of the school but also built bridges for the fusion of diverse cultures. Her educational activities not only enriched students' artistic experiences but also fostered understanding and communication between different cultures, providing strong support for the promotion of cultural diversity and mutual respect.
