Preschool Masterpiece Appreciation Class: Creating Frida Kahlo’s Floral Headpiece
Preschool Masterpiece Appreciation Class: Creating Frida Kahlo’s Floral Headpiece
Learning Objectives:
Introduce Frida Kahlo as a celebrated Mexican artist who expressed herself through bold colors and flower crowns.
Foster creativity through designing and assembling colorful floral headpieces.
Develop fine motor skills through coloring, cutting, folding, and gluing.
Materials Needed:
Pre-printed outline of Frida Kahlo’s face (without a flower crown).
Colorful papers for creating custom flowers.
Pre-printed flower templates (optional for guided activity).
Colored pencils, markers, or crayons.
Safety scissors.
Glue sticks or tape.
Example of a finished flower crown (for inspiration).
Lesson Plan
Introduction (5 minutes):
Meet Frida Kahlo:
Show a picture of Frida Kahlo and highlight her flower crown.
Say: “Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist who painted pictures of herself. She loved wearing colorful flower crowns, which made her look strong and creative, just like her art!”
Interactive Discussion:
Ask the children:
“What do you notice about her flower crown?”
“What colors do you see?”
“Have you seen flowers like these before?”
Activity Setup (5 minutes):
Explain the Flower Crown Project:
Share that each child will help “decorate” Frida Kahlo by creating a flower crown for her.
Show two options:
Option 1: Free design on colorful papers, folding and cutting their unique flowers.
Option 2: Pre-printed flower templates to color, cut, and assemble.
Demonstrate:
For custom flowers, show how to fold colorful papers, and cut out petal shapes.
For template flowers, show how to color the template and cut out one side, then fold and glue to make it stand up slightly.
Hands-On Activity (20–25 minutes):
Create the Flowers:
Encourage children to choose colors and patterns for their flowers.
Provide assistance with cutting and folding where needed.
Assemble the Flower Crown:
Once the flowers are complete, guide the children to arrange and glue their flowers onto Frida Kahlo’s printed outline where her headpiece would be.
Allow for creative freedom—flowers can overlap, be big or small, or use additional decorative elements like leaves or patterns.
Personalize the Artwork:
Encourage children to color or decorate Frida’s clothing or background if they finish early.
Wrap-Up (5 minutes):
Show and Share:
Display each child’s work and let them explain the colors and shapes they chose.
Say: “Look how different and beautiful all of Frida’s flower crowns are! Just like Frida loved expressing herself, you all did too!”
Reflection:
Ask:
“What was your favorite part of making the flowers?”
“What colors make you happy, just like Frida’s crowns made her happy?”
Assessment:
Observe children’s engagement in designing, cutting, and assembling the flowers.
Note how they express themselves through their color choices and arrangement.
Extensions:
Classroom Display: Create a wall of “Frida Kahlo Portraits” to celebrate the children’s work.
Family Involvement: Encourage parents to discuss Frida Kahlo at home and create flower crowns as a family craft.
Seasonal Tie-In: For December, use festive holiday colors like red and green to connect with the season.
