Using Pointillism to Decorate a Letter in Fall Colors
Preschool Art Lesson Plan (45 minutes): Using Pointillism to Decorate a Letter in Fall Colors
Age Group: Preschool (3-5 years)
Theme: Fall Colors and Pointillism
Duration: 45 minutes
Lesson Objectives:
Introduce fall colors and the concept of Pointillism.
Develop fine motor skills through gluing small paper pieces.
Foster creativity and teamwork by working on a group project.
Materials Needed:
Large letter templates (one per child)
Small pieces of paper in fall colors (yellow, orange, red, brown, green)
Glue sticks or liquid glue
Example pictures of Pointillism art (optional)
Smocks or aprons
Table covers
Lesson Procedure:
1. Introduction and Discussion (8 minutes)
Engage with Questions (4 minutes): Start by asking, “Do you know what season it is right now?” Help children identify fall. Discuss the changes: “In fall, leaves change colors and fall off the trees. It gets colder, so we wear warm clothes.”
Identify Fall Colors (4 minutes): Ask the children, “What colors do we see in fall?” List the main colors: yellow, orange, red, brown, and green. Explain, “These are the colors we’ll use for our art today.”
2. Introduction to Pointillism (7 minutes)
Introduce Georges Seurat (3 minutes): “There was a French painter named Georges Seurat who made pictures using small dots of color. This method is called Pointillism.”
Show Example (4 minutes): Show a simple image or explain how small dots of color come together to make a picture. Let children briefly practice making dots on paper with a marker to get the feel of the technique.
3. Art Activity (25 minutes)
Instructions (5 minutes): “Today, each of you will decorate a letter with small pieces of fall-colored paper. This is just like Pointillism, but instead of dots, we will use tiny pieces of paper.”
Decorate the Letter (20 minutes):
Provide children with a letter template.
Allow them to choose from the fall-colored paper and glue them onto their letter.
Encourage creativity and the use of various fall colors. Provide assistance if necessary to ensure they are using fine motor skills effectively.
4. Group Reflection (5 minutes)
Assembly (2 minutes): Once everyone has finished, gather the letters to form a word or create a collaborative piece of art.
Discussion (3 minutes): “Look at all the beautiful colors we used! How do they look together?” Praise the children for their teamwork and creativity.
Key Vocabulary:
Fall Colors: Yellow, orange, red, brown, green
Pointillism: A technique of painting with tiny dots or pieces of color.
Learning Goals:
Recognize and name fall colors.
Develop fine motor skills (gluing, picking up small paper pieces).
Work together to create a shared piece of art.
Assessment:
Observe Participation: Watch how the children engage with the activity and if they can name the colors.
Fine Motor Skills: Check if they use their hands to place and glue the paper carefully.
Extensions (Optional):
Introduce Texture: Provide textured paper or other materials like cotton balls for added sensory exploration.
Fall Nature Walk: If time allows, consider a short walk outside to observe real fall leaves and talk about their colors.
